BOGDAN RACZYNSKI (Rephlex, Toronto - Canada)

Bogdan Raczynski is a Canada based braindance artist. He was born in Poland, but he moved along with his family to the USA during his childhood. During the mid-90s he used trackers to compose techno tracks, which were released on the netlabel Kosmic Free Music Foundation under his alias "Karl". At some point between mid-1996 and 1997 he left the US for Japan where he attended and eventually dropped out of art school. He then spent time playing trumpet in Japanese jazz clubs, eventually becoming homeless and living on the streets of Tokyo or in the homes of friends. During this time he was still making music on his computer; the song Nihon de Homeless on Samurai Math Beats is a reflection of this period of his life. He was eventually signed to Richard D. James's Rephlex Records label. Some of the songs on his first album, Boku Mo Wakaran, had been previously released on the Internet.
His style is similar to that of Squarepusher's, mixing complex beats with strange sounds and samples. He sings in both Japanese and English (and occasionally Polish), usually with melodramatic, exaggerated lyrics in a funny, strained voice. Raczynski enjoys playing games with his listening audience and generally being odd; he has performed shows wearing a Power Rangers costume, performed shows only 10 minutes long, and included a poster of himself wearing a dress in his album Thinking of You. His records and songs are often ironically titled, such as the album 96 Drum 'n' Bass Classixxx, on which each song was written by Bogdan but credited to a different pseudonym, and Ibiza Anthems volume 4, a play on the spate of similarly-titled dance albums. Bogdan, like many artists on Rephlex Records, rarely gives a straight answer when speaking to the media or interviewers.

Born in Switzerland, the young italo-swiss got in touch with the electronic music through the allmighty amiga 500 in the late 80's. Years of experementation and unuseless songs, were followed by dark, unhealthy unique songs. A sound-mixture of france piano-cafe-music and an atomic ereased landscape give's his sound the needed deepness. Combinig different analog soundsources with the infinite world of computers keeps his sound alive and digitally cathed at the same time. Jega is the recording name of electronic music artist Dylan Nathan. He lives in New York and has released records on the Skam and Planet Mu record labels. Sunao Inami (Japan):

Sunao started working with synthesizers when he was 13 years old. He has a huge knowledge of analog and digital synthesis and is a key figure in the field of wavetable synthesis. After playing in the post-new wave band CONTROLLED VOLTAGE in the early '90s, he built his own Internet servers and started creating improvised electronic music. In 1998, his 1st album was released by the Belgian label, SubRosa. In 2000, he participated in the Y.M.O. (Yellow MagicOrchestra) remix project "TECHNOPOLIS 2000-00". Sunao has toured extensively in the past year, performing in Europe, the U.S. and Taiwan with other musicians and dancers, and around Japan. He also performs twice monthly in a live studio webcast series entitled "Live from Far East," and has done over 60 such webcast gigs since 2002. He runs CAVE Studio, his own label "electr-ohm" and the electronica/noise label and shop "C.U.E. Records" in Kobe. He also appears with the legendary Japanese band AUTO-MOD at Kobe Underground Festival.

Henry Collinz started his musical career with the now infamous punk band DUFF, where he weilded the six string and served vocal duties. Vex'd (Planet Mu) creates a sound which is in many ways inseparable from a romanticized, constructed reality, more in tune with fiction than mundane London. Conversely, Dubstep is a sound which is utterly contemporary. Vex'd's adventure in sonic fiction is a continuation of the bass culture which has been part of London's musical lineage for many years. Despite the confusingly titled Rephlex Grime compilations, and although the two are related, Dubstep and Grime should not be confused. Grime and Dubstep are two distinctly different soundworlds which simultaneously exist within the postcodes. Both engage with the musical heritage of bass culture, with one evoking the sound of the gritty city and the other evocative of a slightly more otherworldly place. The latter is Dubstep and it is Vex'd's playground.




Solar X is a Russian scientist named Roman Belavkin. His music is a variation on drum and bass music that is more interested in the drum than the bass. The music is complex, confusing, and confounding the first time you hear it. You think, what is this guy doing? But listen again, and you will discover music that is both incredibly intelligent and incredibly warm. Belavkin has a great sense of humor as well as a keen music aesthetic. His music is intricately layered, and you discover something new with each listen.
